Founded in 1885, St. Thomas began as an all-male, Catholic seminary. A gift from local railroad tycoon James J. Hill provided funds to establish the St. Paul Seminary. Under John Ireland, archbishop of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Tomas Aquinas seminary became a liberal arts college in 1894.
